The Movie Magic is Back!
The Cambridge Film Festival was established in 1977 and is one of the best-loved and most influential film events in the UK – the country's third-longest running film festival after Edinburgh and London.
This year the 31st Cambridge Film Festival will run from 15 to 25 September 2011 and is held primarily at the Arts Picturehouse, 38/39 St Andrew's Street, Cambridge CB2 3AR.
With a record number of film submissions this year, UK and World premieres, special seasons and new films from every corner of the globe, from Cannes to Kolkata, the 31st Cambridge Film Festival promises to be more wide-ranging than ever.
Feature highlights this year include the much anticipated film version of TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY, Nicolas Winding Refn's acclaimed actioner DRIVE, actor Paddy Considine's directorial debut feature TYRANNOSAUR and Woody Allen's MIDNIGHT IN PARIS.
There's the strange – eccentric Japanese director Shion Sono's GUILTY OF ROMANCE, the controversial – Julia Leigh's erotic meditation on sex and voyeurism SLEEPING BEAUTY, and the gritty – Noreen Kershaw's drama of Triads in Manchester and Liverpool, ACT OF GRACE.
Very much a Cambridge story is the period science fiction drama DIMENSIONS – written, financed, filmed, edited and being given its world premiere right here in the city. We will be welcoming many of the filmmakers and cast members for Q&As to accompany Festival screenings and special seasons (see below for season details).
Documentaries are especially strongly represented this year. EL BULLI takes us inside the world's most revered restaurant. BOMBAY BEACH reveals the strange community in a forgotten corner of Arizona. THE BENGALI DETECTIVE shows us Kolkata's very own Sam Spade – by night, a dance contest enthusiast. And THE BALLAD OF GENESIS AND LADY JAYE reveals the defiantly unconventional life of legendary artist, iconoclast and creator of industrial music, Genesis P-Orridge.
There is also a smorgasbord of special events, including an evening with renowned critic Mark Kermode, a tribute to Bernard Herrmann by fellow composer and accompanist Neil Brand.
While the Festival takes place primarily at the Arts Picturehouse, Cambridge, there are other events and screenings taking place in a rich variety of venues, including free screenings of films from the BFI National Archive in Cambridge's historic Magdalene Street, and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and FINDING NEMO at the Lee Valley White Water Centre (the first Olympic venue to open to the public).
Prior to the main Festival, there are open-air screenings in Grantchester Meadows of DIRTY DANCING (27 Aug) and SOME LIKE IT HOT (28 Aug), while in the heart of Rendlesham Forest, audiences can experience Douglas Fairbanks' ROBIN HOOD (29 Aug) and – connecting with the forest's reputation as 'Britain's Roswell' – Spielberg's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (30 Aug). ROBIN HOOD features the world premiere of a new live score, composed and performed by Festival regular Neil Brand ('the doyen of silent film accompanists' - Radio 4). It will be performed again at a special screening in the grand hall of Trinity College, during the Festival.
