The Cambridge Science Festival 2011 posted on 21 March 2011

The Cambridge Science Festival kicked off on 14 March offering a series of informative and fun events to teach science fans and ‘phobes alike about the wonders of science. With something for all ages, the Festival is co-ordinated by the University of Cambridge Community Affairs team and is hosted in working departments and at venues all over the City. Staff and student volunteers enthusiastically share their knowledge and passion for science to put on fantastic, mostly free, talks, hands on activities and films.

To coincide with National Science and Engineering Week, and themed ‘Science For Life,’ there are 150 events, spanning the subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Last week’s highlights included a colourful workshop on the science of art conservation at the Fitzwilliam Museum, an explosive exploration of the famous bouncing bomb at Madingley Hall, and enlightening talks on nano photography, science and faith, and Darwinism.

The opportunity is there for people of all ages to drop in and enjoy some ad-hoc learning or try the hands on sessions available at the Polar Museum (held most days at the Scott Polar Research Institute) exploring life in the Polar Regions. The Festival also brings together many other cultural influences from around Cambridge and the rest of the world – sample a unique take on mental health, through the media of music, drama and creative presentation in Pembroke College cellars. If you need an extra fix, throughout the two weeks you can enjoy comedy, music and story telling on the Festival Fringe.

The Festival’s weekend sessions, Science on Saturday/Sunday will feature talks and activities guaranteed to provide family fun and spark children’s interest in the sciences. Exciting and adventurous Science Junkies and Gastronuts offer a journey through science that is as far from white coats and lab benches as you can get. Ranging from archaeology to zoology, there is a staggering array of activities all day on 19 & 26 March.
